Rebuilding Lives in Cheptais

In the remote region of Mt Elgon is the Cheptais district, a community desperate to heal from the atrocities inflicted upon them as a result of political corruption and the SLDF (Saboat Land Defence Force) militia during the post-election violence of 2007-2008.

Young men were forced to join the militia groups, slaughters and killings were carried out openly; homes were burnt; older men castrated. Women and girls were targeted, often abducted from their homes or while walking home from school and gang raped. Many have children as a consequence, some contracted HIV.

In efforts to help deal with the trauma and rebuild a peaceful community Hellen Makoe, mother of four and survivor of the violence, dedicates herself to counselling the young women and men who were affected -some have come forward only recently while many others continue to live in fear.

She receives guidance and specialised training in forgiveness and reconciliation through NGO Feminenza to help her develop the leadership skills to initiate long-term remedy in a region vulnerable to conflict.

As an ongoing documentary project, this part of the series focuses on the young women with children of rape and ex-militia who have been acquitted from court due to their enforced participation with the SLDF.
